Tennant Creek - Cities, Towns and Localities

Tennant Creek is home of
Nyinkka the goanna

Tennant Creek is a small township located just over 500 km north of Alice Springs (and the Red Centre) and south of Katherine (in the tropical Top End), Tennant Creek area is called home by 9 Aboriginal groups, including Alyawarr, Kaiditch, Walpiri and Warumungu people.

Known as the 'Golden Heart' of the Northern Territory, it is the site of Australia's last major gold rush in the 1930s. Visitors can explore the history of the goldmining town in attractions such as the Battery Hill Mining Centre. In fact mining is still a major factor in the region, with a number of exploration continuing to this day. Although now, explorers are searching for more than gold.

Prior to the gold rush era of the 1930s, the only building in the area was the repeater station, that was built in 1872 for the Overland Telegraph Line. Located just north of the town, the Telegraph Station buildings and grounds can be explored by those visiting or passing through.
