The seventh largest country in the world, the India sub-continent is unique from
the rest of Asia, with Pakistan, China and Nepal to the north. To the north are the towering Himalayas which slope out into
the great Indo-Gangetic Plains. In central India, the Vindhya Ranges separate
the Deccan Peninsula from the northern plains. To the east is the Bay of Bengal,
with the Arabian Sea on the west, whilst the southern tip of the country ends in
the Indian Ocean. The official language is Hindi in the Devanagri script. The
states are free to decide their own regional languages, with 18 official
languages spoken throughout the country. Sanskrit is also an official language,
although it is used mainly in rituals and ceremonies.
