A peninsula extending into the Mediterranean Sea in southern Europe, Italy
became a nation in 1861 when the city states of the peninsula, along with
Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor Emmanuel II. The early 1920s
saw the establishment of a Fascist dictatorship, that was itself replaced by a
