The country was created in 1963 through a federation of the former British
colonies of Malaya and Singapore, and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and
Sarawak on the northern coast of Borneo (who made up East Malaysia). For the
next several years the country was to see attempts by Indonesian to control
Malaysia, Philippine laying claims to Sabah, and the secession of Singapore in
1965. Malaysia is rich in history, where in the north, it is reputed that the most
ancient state in the country, Kedah, has uncovered archaeological findings
at Bujang Valley of evidence of a Hindu-Buddhist civilisation dating back to
300 AD.
