Located across part of eastern Europe and the northern part of Asia is the
largest country in the world, Russia. It shares borders with North Korea, Chines
People's Repbulic, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine,
Byelorussia, Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Norway (in the
north). There are 11 times zones, stretching over two continents. On December
25, 1991, the official name, Russian Federation was ratified by the Supreme
Soviet. Administratively, the Russian Federation is divided into 21 republics, 6
krays (federal territories), 2 federal cities, 49 regions, 1 autonomous region
and 10 autonomous areas.
With the popular destinations of Moscow, St Petersburg and Siberia,
there is much more to Russia. It's largest lakes include the Caspian, Baikal,
Ladoga, Onega and Taimyr, with Baikal Lake, located in Siberia, being the
largest fresh-water lake in the
world. It's highest peak is Elbrus in the Caucasus, the Ural Mountain Range
separating European and Asian Russia, the Altai Range in southern Siberia, the
Kamchatka Mountains stretching along the Pacific coast.
Russia also lay claims some to some 120,000 rivers with a length of 10 km or
more, with the majority of all local rivers and major rivers such as the Ob,
Irtysh, Yenisei, Lena, being located in the Arctic Ocean basin. The Volga that
flows all the way to the Caspian Sea, is the longest in Europe.
