One of the great tourism frontiers for travellers, explorers and
adventurers is Antarctica, Earth's southernmost continent. Located in the
Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, it is home to the geographic South
Pole. This remote region is popular with tourist seeking an experience that is
different and memorable.
ln January 1841, an expedition led by James Clark Ross became the first
to penetrate the Antarctic pack ice south of New Zealand, and discover a sea
that would allow access deep into the heart of Antarctica. During the next
five weeks, the expedition discovered the massive Ross lce Shelf, the active
volcano Mt Erebus and open water south o177" latitude. These discoveries
paved the way for future explorers, scientists and adventurers.
follow in Ross' wake, skirting or pushing through the ethereal world of pack
ice to attempt to reach Cape Adare, site of the first confirmed landing on
the Antarctic mainland, by Carsten Borchgrevink in 1895. Four years later he
was to winter over with a scientific party, the first to do so on the
Antarctic continent. His expedition hut still nestles amid the world's
Adélie penguin rookery, beneath the stunning Admiralty Mountains.
