Airlie Beach is a relatively young town and was created
as a tourist destination and jumping off point to the
wonderful Whitsunday Island group. The town was named Airlie
by a councillor on the Proserpine Council after the Parish
of Airlie in Scotland. It wasn't until the post office
opened in 1959 that the town was officially called Airlie
Beach. The residents at the time requested this and the
postmaster general agreed. Today you will find a treasure
trove of shops, accommodation, resorts, backpackers, bars,
boutiques, cruise booking agencies, boat charters, Island
Tours, caravan parks, dive shops, internet cafe's and all
the usual trappings of a thriving tourist town. Airlie Beach
is the tourist centre for the Whitsunday region.
