Bundaberg - Cities, Towns and Localities

Timber was the first industry established in this region of Queensland in the late 1860’s. With the introduction of sugar cane to the area in the 1880’s the population grew rapidly and the area was gazetted a town in 1902 and a city in 1913. The area continues to thrive with an abundance of parks and gardens, sporting facilities, natural resources, and government services.

Located on the Burnett River, Bundaberg is surrounded by cane fields, and is the place to come and view the sugar industry. Located east of the Bruce Highway are Bundaberg’s main beaches of Elliott Heads, Bargara and Burnett Heads, all part of the Coral Coast region.

Just off the coast you will find Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave Island here you can go on a reef walk, snorkel, dive and view one of the great wonders of the world the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Whale watching is also a popular activity in these parts. The waters in these parts are also stinger free. Nearby Mon Repos Beach is one of the largest turtle nesting sites in Australia, definitely no dogs allowed or beach umbrellas above the high tide mark.

Other attractions include the Bundaberg Rum Distillery definitely worth a look and a drink, the whaling wall and many more attractions.

Situated in the Central Business District the Centre is an ideal location to provide residents and visitors alike with information on the Bundaberg region. Such information as maps, events calendar, regional booklets, community information, accommodation, restaurants, tourist attractions (including a skatebowl brochure), historical information, fishing trips, car rental are only a small portion of the information which you can obtain. Turtle tours, Lady Musgrave Island and Lady Elliot Island trips may be booked through the Centre.
