Barramundi Capital of Australia
Established in 1865, Burketown named after the famous
explorer Burke, has suffered boom and bust over its history.
Located near the Albert River on the edge of the Savannah
grasslands this small town was once decimated by what was
then called "Gulf Fever" most likely typhoid or dengue
fever. Most of the residents who survived the outbreak moved
to Normanton. After this outbreak the town somehow didnt
live up to the promises of its early founders, today the
small town has a population of some 260 residents with easy
access to the Gulf of Carpentaria via the Albert River for
fishing.
