The Byfield park is mostly made up of massive parabolic sand dunes some reaching 6 km inland. The northern part of the park has granite mountain peaks (Mt Atherton) and eucalypt forests and in some locations remnant rainforests. The sand dune areas are covered mostly in coastal heath plants. Access to the beach areas is by 4wd only. Some sandy areas can be difficult to negotiate due to high sand dunes.
 

Camping is permitted please obtain permits before entering the park. Some facilities are available, no open fires are allowed.
