via Blackwater, Emerald, to
Capricorn Highway follows the route along the Tropic of Capricorn, providing a
journey of discovery and adventure.
This 567 km drive takes you from Rockhampton
(the Beef Capital of Australia), westward through the mining community of
Blackwater, Blackdown National Park (offering overnight camping, booking /
permit required), Emerald (centre of the gem fields), then on to Barcaldine (the
recognised birthplace of the Australian Labour Party and home to the Australian
Workers Heritage Centre).
For fossickers, just west of Emerald are the gem fields, townships and
localities in the Gemfields Region include Willows, Bogantungan, Sapphire
and Rubyvale, the latter two named after the precious stones to be found there.
