The ‘Central Queensland’ region is based around the Tropic of Capricorn stretching from the east coast of Queensland encompassing Rockhampton, Gladstone and the Capricorn Coast, and extending west to the Central Highlands and Emerald, and north to Mackay.

Including the ‘Central West’, it borders the Northern Territory in the west and South Australia in the south-west corner.

It is a region that lays claim to being where the world famous ‘Waltzing Matilda’ was written, and the birthplace of Australia’s International Airline - Qantas.

Birdsville Races
• 1st Saturday in September
• Visitors from around the world converge every year at the tiny outback town of Birdsville for the annual Birdsville Racing Carnival, held over two days. In a racing program offering cash prices and the much sought after XXXX Gold Birdsville Cup trophy, the races are held just 3 km to the south east of the town, on a claypan alongside sand dunes. As well as racing, visitors celebrate with two nights of live entertainment, along side the other daytime activities.
International Yabby Races
• Albert St, WINDORAH QLD 4481 • Ph: 07 4656 3063 • Email
• August
• Herald as the ‘International Yabby Races’, this annual event attracts over 400 people from around the region and visitors passing through on their way to the Birdsville Races. Held in the main street, punters have the opportunity to buy one of 40 yabbies, which will race for glory in four races including the Barcoo Bolt, Thomson Trot, Kyabra Kanter and Coopers Creek Cup.

Fifty percent of the money raised from the auction supports many local organisations and helps in purchasing equipment in a number of worthwhile projects in Windorah.

The International Yabby Races is a unique racing event and once the last yabby has crawled its way past the finishing line, visitors can enjoy the local hospitality at the Western Star Hotel.
