A flourishing town once home to a large gold rush the
gold mining heritage of the area can still be experienced
today. First settled in the 1860's when gold and copper was
discovered nearby. One of the most devastating floods in
Australia's history hit this small town in December 1916
when 35 people were drowned as a result of floodwaters
rushing through the town. Later the town was moved to higher
ground to escape the river torrents. There is a piano stuck
up a tree in Capricorn street to indicate the height of the
floodwaters at the time. The area has a rich Chinese
history with many Chinese miners coming into the area to
make their fortunes with the gold. Racial riots took place
between the whites and Chinese with the Chinese eventually
being moved out.
