Cloncurry - Cities, Towns and Localities
Burke and Wills were the first people to explore this region of Queensland in 1861 whilst passing through to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Burke named a river nearby after his cousin Lady Elizabeth Cloncurry which was eventually extended to the town when it was gazetted in 1876.

Copper was discovered here and turned this small outpost into a prosperous town. The Great Australian Mine was established here and operated until the 1920’s. More QANTAS history exists in this part of the world too. The idea of setting up the airline was first mooted in Cloncurry. The first QANTAS flight landed here and the original QANTAS hangar still stands at the Cloncurry airport. A local saying goes that QANTAS was ‘conceived in Cloncurry, born in Winton, and grew up in Longreach’.

Another claim to fame for Cloncurry is that the famous Royal Flying Doctor Service, started by Rev. John Flynn was conceived and setup in started service here in 1928. The town now operates the John Flynn Place Memorial Museum.
