Coolangatta was named after the schooner
Coolangatta
which was wrecked on the beach just north of the Tweed River
in 1846. The ship was waiting to collect a cargo of cedar
when the mishap occurred. In 1974 large ocean waves
uncovered a wreck which is believed to be the Coolangatta.
As early as 1880 the location was considered a holiday
retreat with its beautiful beaches and fabulous weather. The
area was settled by many different types of settlers all
with an entrepreneurial spirit that is still reflected in
the people today.
