Welcome to the Western Downs, a place of wide open spaces, filled with the
rich pioneering history of the real Queensland. Situated just three hours drive
west of Brisbane, the Western Downs region is easily explored via some of
Queensland's major arterial highways. The region is also made accessible by
rail, air or by one of the charter coaches.
Located within the Darling Downs
region and overlapping localities in the Southern Downs region, the area covered
by the Western Downs is sometimes referred to as The Maranoa, after the Maranoa
River which runs through it.
The Western Downs promotes an area that starts from the eastern part of the
arid South West region of Queensland to the agricultural region of the Darling Downs in the east, whilst to the west is the dry
River and Maranoa River are the two main catchments in the region, whilst the
Warrego Highway, Carnarvon Highway and Balonne Highway are the major road routes
across the region.
