Dimbulah - Cities, Towns and Localities

Dimbulah Tobbacco

Mining was the first reason to settle this rich part of far north Queensland. In 1876 the town of Dimbulah was established to service the Tyrconnell Gold Mine one of the richest mines on the Hodgkinson Gold Fields. The name 'Dimbulah' is thought to have come from the local Aboriginal language for "long Waterhole" referring to the Walsh River that runs nearby the town.

The area around Dimbulah was originally home to the Kuku Djungan tribe. During the 1920's the QLD government forcibly removed most of their children forcing the tribe to scatter. In 1994 members of the tribe got together and purchased some of their homeland a property called Kopaparinga. With Mount Mulligan a spectacular 300m high plateau with sandstone outcrops. This is sacred land to the tribe.

Dimbulah Irrigation System

In the early 1900's the area received an influx of Italian migrants and tobacco was introduced becoming the areas major industry soon after. Other industries have taken hold in recent years including Tea Tree Oil, Mangoes, Cashews and Cattle.
