Edmund Kennedy the ill fated explorer who tried to find a
way in 1848 through the swamps and rainforest in this part
of Queensland spent 6 months trying to get to the tip of
Cape York. Kennedy and his gang suffered disease, fights with local
aborigines, swamps, insects, heat, and mountain ranges,
eventually Kennedy himself was killed not far from his goal
by aborigines. Three members of the group survived to
rendezvous with the ship the Ariel to tell the story. The
park named after Kennedy is located just 4km north of
Cardwell and features a huge array of plant life. Extensive
mangrove swamps, rainforest and eucalypt forest cover the
majority of the park. The mangrove swamps feature just about
every type of mangrove growing in Australia along with the
rare Arenga Palm.
