Following are some events happening in Queensland. For more information, check the destination pages of the town or area you are visiting.

Some events happen at the same time throughout Australia, such as Christmas and New Years Eve celebrations, ANZAC Day, Australia Day, local markets, agricultural shows etc. Some scheduled events only have approximate dates, with some dates changing or being cancelled.

Bundaberg Mon Repos Conservation Park
• February/March (Turtle hatching season) • November (start of the turtle season)
• Mon Repos supports the largest concentration of nesting sea turtles on the east Australian mainland and is one of the two largest loggerhead turtle rookeries in the south Pacific Ocean region. To see the turtles hatching, head to Mon Repos Beach.

Chinchilla Chinchilla Melon Festival
• Biennially in February
• Known as the ‘Melon Capital’ of Australia, Chinchilla produces a quarter of Australia’s melons and celebrates the fact in their biennially Melon Festival. Join with the locals for some hilarious fun and festivities as events, such as melon skiing, melon iron man, melon bungee, melon bullseye, pip spitting and melon tossing, get into full throw.

There’s back-to-back entertainment for the whole family with markets, a street parade, arts and crafts, a poets breakfast, luncheons, free concerts, and loads more over the week.  So pull on some old clothes and take to the streets that are awash with melon mayhem. But be warned. You might end up in a very sticky situation.

March Events - Queensland

The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race
• March
• The 308 nautical mile ocean race is Queensland's premier blue water classic. The race is one of Australia's major sporting events held over the Easter weekend.

Gin Gin Country Rock on Easter Sunday

Gin Gin Wild Scotsman Country Festival
• Annual event held last week of March
• Bring the family and join in the fun as Gin Gin celebrates the capture of Queensland’s only authentic bushranger, James McPherson. There is an re-enactment of his capture held during the festival.

Gladstone Gladstone Harbour Festival
• March
• Featuring a week long Marina Mardi Gras that features free live on-stage entertainment, street theatre, buskers, street parade, markets and three giant fireworks displays. Combine this with a diverse range of sporting and cultural activities around the city and top it off with the exciting finish of the famous blue water classic the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race and you have the makings of a fabulous fun filled event.

Ipswich The Handmade Expo - Ipswich
• Dates: see The Handmade Expo
• Over 90 stalls of lovingly handmade and crafted products which include children’s clothing, greeting cards, soaps, hats, paintings, bears, toys, fudge, skincare, jewellery, country craft and much, much more. There is something for everyone!!!

The Handmade Expo is coming to Ipswich


Normanton Annual Normanton Barra Classic
• Easter long weekend
• Held on the Norman River just outside of Normanton, competition is stiff with some great prizes, so make sure you book in early.

Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival
• Biennial event held in March - check website for year.
• Celebrating not only apples and grapes, but other fresh produce that the district has to offer. Come and check out the local wines and other tasty gourmet fares. Come enjoy our three days of non-stop fun and entertainment.

• Annual Event. A cultural program of more than 12 days designed to cater for all interests and age groups. The program ranges from street parades, shows, the Mayor's festival ball and art exhibitions to opera performances, multicultural activities, children's programs and concerts for youths to seniors.

Aramac Harry Redford Cattle Drive
• May/June
• Be right there in the saddle and discover the secrets of horsemanship and droving knowledge passed on from generation to generation. Ride through the desert country, down the jump up, across the clayplans and through the Mitchell grass plains. Roll out your swag under the stars and witness spectacular sunrises and sunsets, bush yarns, bush poetry and fair dinkum true blue droving (camp oven) tucker. Experience first hand an authentic outback cattle drive.

The Harry Redford Cattle Drive is an authentic Australian Cattle Drive, based in Aramac Shire. Spend days in the saddle following in the footsteps of Harry Redford (aka Captain Starlight). Spend nights under the stars, enjoying campfire camaraderie and traditional camp-oven meals.

Visitors to the region can enjoy the special events held in the towns of Aramac and Muttaburra.

Charters Towers Charters Towers Country Music Festival
• First week in May
• Thousands of country music fans and performers from throughout Australia and overseas flocks to this annual event with $30,000 in prize money being offered.

Hamilton Island Hamilton Island Cup
• May/June
• The Coca-Cola Hamilton Island Cup the richest outrigger canoeing regatta in the world. Come along and get amongst the money at the richest outrigger event in the world. See the Regatta Info section for prize money allocation.

Richmond Richmond Fossil Festival
• biennial event held over 4 days - May 2008
• The Richmond Fossil Festival provides a number of different and unique outback events that include the Champion Moonrock Throwing Competition, Loader Pull, Show and Shine, Mardi Gras, Friday Night Rodeo, Musical Pony Ride, Bernie Barra Hole-In-One, Fossil Hunt, Family Sports Day, Tug-of-War, Windy Wizard, Fossil Festival Floats and a number of other family fun events.

Seventeen Seventy The Captain Cook 1770 Festival
• May
• The festival commemorate the landing of Lieutenant James Cook and his party on May 24th in this location of Seventeen Seventy. The event celebrates ‘The Birthplace of Queensland’.

Whitsunday Islands and Region Whale Watching
• May to September
The Whitsunday Islands and surrounding region provide the warm shallow and sheltered waters for the humpback whales, providing the ideal calving ground and nursery for newborn whales.

Brisbane Home Festival
• June
• Previously held in April, the Home Festival is a free all-ages event to celebrate, connect and explore the complex meaning of ‘home’ through music and creativity. A local community event, it provides space for up-and-coming performers of a variety of genres, and provides spaces for children to seniors to share the joy of creativity.

Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival
• Biennial gathering held in June
• Come celebrate the World's Oldest Living Culture - The Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival is an exciting biennial gathering in Cape York Peninsula, that highlights the many diverse Communities, language, song, dance and stories. The Festival is about passing on culture across the generations, along with showcasing the strength, pride and uniqueness of Aboriginal people.

This 3 day festival has over 20 communities participate from across the region, with up to 500 traditional performers who participate in the festival's program.

Cooktown Cooktown Discovery Festival
• June
• This annual event held over the June Queen’s Birthday weekend celebrates the European discovery and recording of the unique people, flora and fauna of this area. A popular drawcards is the re-enactment of the landing of Lt. James Cook and his crew from the damaged boat Endeavour in 1770.

Charters Towers Charters Towers Restorers Annual Swap Meet and Motor Show
• June
• Annual meet event that opens to the public with its huge range of vintage cars and old machinery. The yearly show has markets, novelty events and a car show.

Porcupine Gorge National Park
Porcupine Gorge Challenge
• June
• With the first challenge held in 2001 in conjunction with the Centenary of Federation celebrations, the Porcupine Gorge Challenge has been going from strength to strength. This event not only challenges serious competitors but provides the opportunity for locals and adjoining communities to enjoy the event, set in the wonderful natural attraction of Porcupine Gorge National Park. Competitors travel from around Australia to compete.

Categories include Open Men’s, Ladies and Under 16 and Under 12 section for boys and girls, with the overall winner taking pride of place on the perpetual trophy. A special perpetual trophy is also awarded to the first local Flinders Shire resident past the post. Prize monies is given to the first 4 place getters in the Open Men’s and Ladies sections, Junior’s are awarded with individual trophies and a prize pack.

Imbil Rally Queensland
• June
• The third round of the Australian Rally Championship, featuring crews from around Australia in a high speed gravel-road competition.

Normanton Normanton Rodeo and Show
• June
• One of the big social events on the Normanton calendar, the Normanton rodeo and gymkhana is fun event for children and families. Live entertainment and exhibitions.

Brisbane Winter Festival
• June - August (dates vary for each location - see website over details)
• The Australian Winter Festival provides an authentic Alpine winter in the heart of the city. With locations in Sydney. Melbourne, and Brisbane, the festival offer exciting line-ups, including an exciting array of gourmet winter food, some dazzling action on the ice, and authentic apr่s ski experiences.
