Around 1880 it was determined that Brisbane required
military protection against possible invasion. A fort was
commissioned and built at Lytton near the mouth of the
Brisbane River. This is the birth place of Queensland's military history. Brisbane at the time had a population of
some 100,000 people. The Fort is a well preserved example
of a pentagon shaped fort surrounded by a moat. Most of the
guns have been restored and are in working order and used
for ceremonial occasions. The fort became a national park in
1988. Organised tours are available, as are gas barbecues,
however, no naked fires are allowed in the park. An information centre is
available with refreshments and souvenirs available to
purchase.
