The Frankland Islands are not far from the mainland and provide a
unique Great Barrier Reef experience. A visit to Normanby Island
offers a reef system as part of an island, displaying the features
of a coral cay and a continental island. Snorkelling and reef
viewing are easily accessed from the beach, where you will be amazed
at the diverse marine environment. You can also take leisurely
island walks to explore the rainforest and surrounding rock pools
and reef-flats. Camping is also available on the neighbouring
Russell Island. Permits are issued on application by the Department
of Environment and Heritage. Location: south of
Cairns.
