Georgetown - Cities, Towns and Localities

...a part of the Gulf Savannah Region

This small outback town of Georgetown was originally the centre of a major gold rush. As with most places the gold soon petered out and the township was left looking for an industry to sustain the population.

Located on the Etheridge River the town makes a good rest stop when driving between Cairns and Normanton on the Gulf. Today the area is famous for its cattle and the development of the Droughtmaster cattle breed, see below for more information.

Gem fields are also big in this region, topaz is especially easy to find.

Check out our listing of Georgetown accommodation and Gulf Savannah accommodation. In addition to our listed online travel guide information, contact the local tourism visitor centre for your destination for more attractions, tours, local maps and other information.
