Gin Gin / Lake Monduran - Cities, Towns and Localities |
|
Located on the Bruce Highway, and just 45 km west of Bundaberg and 370 km
north of Brisbane is the rural based Kolan Shire and the town of Gin Gin. The
Gin Gin district is nicknamed Wild Scotsman Country after one of Queenslands
few bushranger James Alpin McPherson. Mcpherson was also known as the Wild Scotsman
and would laid in wait for the mail delivery. He was
captured on 30 March, 1866 at Monduran Station, just 13 km north of the town.
After serving 15 years of his 20 year sentence, McPherson subsequently became a
law abiding citizen. His infamy is now celebrated as the Wild Scotsman
Festival.

Just 19 km north of Gin Gin, Lake Monduran has long been known by
local fisherman as an excellent fishery aided by the restocking program carried
out by the Monduran Anglers and Stocking Assoc. Today there is a commercial
campground and an annual Barramundi Fishing Competition usually held in October
each year.

Boolboonda Tunnel
Located on the road to Mount Perry, about 32 km west
of Gin Gin is the longest
unsupported man-made tunnel in the southern hemisphere. The tunnel was cut
through solid rock and earth, stretching for some 192 metres, for the trains
that carried copper from the Mount Perry mines to Bundaberg. This engineering
feat was built during 1883-1884. The railway line that ran through the tunnel
ceased operations in 1962. The tunnel has now become home to bats, and is still
open to the public to drive or walk through.
