'Place of Flowers'
Girraween or "Place of Flowers" is a magnificent park
located on the Queensland/New South Wales border just south of
Stanthorpe. Each spring the park explodes with wild flower
blooms amongst huge granite outcrops millions of years old,
many of them in precarious positions having weathered that
way over millennia. Some of the wildflowers you can
experience in the spring are purple, yellow and red pea
flowers, orchids, flannel flowers all set amongst golden
wattles, stringy bark eucalypts, red gum and black butt
trees. The park is also a bird lovers paradise with 146
bird species recorded including the very rare turquoise
parrot. Native animals such as kangaroo, spotted tail
quolls, sugar gliders, echidna, and possums are also
plentiful. The park is also home to a wide variety of snakes
and frogs. There are plenty of medium grade walking tracks
available, cliff climbing for the more experienced,
campsites, and picnic areas.
