Cherry Venture Ship Wreck Fraser Island

The worlds largest sand island 123km long covers over 165000ha and is home to a huge variety of plant and animals with some unusual features for an island made entirely of sand. Such as rainforests, freshwater lakes, extensive woodlands, large variety of wildflowers, long sandy beaches. So unusual is this islands natural features that the entire Island has been granted a World Heritage Listing.

Getting to the Island is by water or air from Hervey Bay once there the only way to get around is by 4WD. There are both public and private campgrounds on the island in general with only basic facilities. As usual camping is only permitted with a permit which must be obtained in advance. During the school holidays bookings should be made up to 6 weeks in advance due to the large numbers of campers and only limited numbers of camp sites. Camping generally is not permitted on the beaches. Open fires are not permitted on any national park beaches.

Any vehicles brought onto the island also must obtain a RAMS permit with funds raised going back into park management services. For further information on vehicle access download the Great Sandy National Park Information Sheet below.

Other attractions on the island include the extensive walking tracks available for visitors, swimming in the pristine fresh water streams and lakes, shipwrecks, fishing, and surfing however sharks are a menace here. Photography is very popular due to the ever changing colours and moods of the sands. Professional photographers require a permit before working on the island.

Dingoes are numerous on the island and should not be fed see details below for more information.
