Gulf Savannah - Cities, Towns and Localities
The Gulf Savannah region of Tropical North Queensland covers an area of 186,000 square km, extending from the Great Dividing Range in the east, to the Northern Territory border in the west. Only 250 km, and a few hours driving, west of Cairns the savannah grasslands is filled with wildlife and untouched bushland. There are historic mining towns, the unique “Gulflander” railmotor, the “Savannahlander” train, cattle stations, wetlands teeming with wildlife, aboriginal settlements and the pristine beauty of Lawn Hill and Cobbold Gorges.

Approaching from Cairns, Darwin, or Townsville, the Gulf Savannah is accessible via a network of sealed and unsealed roads. However, during the summer months, which is generally the wet season, some roads may be closed, drivers are advised to check road and weather conditions.

Among the attractions in the Gulf are the Undara Lava Tubes near Mount Surprise, the beauty of Cobbold Gorge, and the rainforest of Lawn Hill National Park near the Queensland / Northern Territory Border. The Lawn Hill National Park is also the third World Heritage listed area in Tropical North Queensland - the Riversleigh Fossil Fields. Added in 1994 to the World Heritage register, the immense limestone expanses of Riversleigh are considered one of the paleontological finds of the century.

Many travellers tour the Gulf by their own means, taking the time to enjoy the wide open spaces and the many attractions such as the bird life around waterholes or fishing remote rivers and waterways. Of course, there are also many organised tours departing from Cairns and other centres throughout the Gulf Savannah.

Although the Gulf Savannah is a vast region, it is thinly populated with towns and small communities, all within easy driving distance of each other.
