Part of the Whitsunday Group of Islands, it is thought that the
island derived its name from the crude maps that were drawn, as
seen on the British Admiralty charts from the 1820s, showing it with
a distinctive hook. It wasnt until the 1860s when surveys gave the
island its real shape. The island is some 58 square kilometres of national
park plus a resort. Located in the South Pacific Ocean on the edge of the Coral
Sea, Hook Island is the second largest island in the Whitsunday group, and
offers visitors the opportunity for fringe reef diving and snorkelling just
offshore, as well as beautiful beaches, breath-taking lookouts and enjoyable
walking tracks.
