'Australia's Sugar Capital'
Mackay is home to the largest bulk sugar terminal in the
world, is the largest sugar producing region in the country,
with a sugar refinery and many sugar mills. With a
population of over 80,000 residents and several famous
islands just off the coast the Mackay region is a great
place to explore central Queensland. The region was first
settled in 1862 by Captain John Mackay who say the promise
in the location with fertile country and plentiful water in
the Pioneer River. Within 20 years of settlement the region
was the largest sugar producer in Queensland and has
continued to grow into a bountiful city not only in natural
