Malanda - Cities, Towns and Localities
Famous for its milk throughout Queensland and as far as the Northern Territory, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and Malaysia this thriving tropical paradise has the only tropical dairy industry in Australia. Originally settled in the 1880's the dairy industry was identified as a "goer" by a Mr James English around 1908, he imported dairy cattle from the rich and established dairy industries around the Richmond Rivers area of northern NSW and Kiama just south of Sydney.

Butter was soon being manufactured here and the industry developed its own co-operative to share the wealth with the local dairy farmers. To this day most Queenslanders will say Malanda is the finest tasting milk and will pay extra for it.

The area surrounding Malanda is a tropical paradise with many national parks and outdoors activities to choose from. The coastal region of Cairns and its international facilities are only an hours drive away (82km).

Malanda Attractions

Curtain Fig Tree
• The Atherton Tablelands most famous tree. Easily accessible and amazing to see.
Lake Barrine National Park
• Lake Barrine is a clear blue lake, 65 m deep and surrounded by lush rainforest, that is also a maar (a volcanic crater formed by explosions from overheating groundwater). There are tall trees (35-40 m), large fig trees, and an understorey with long-leaved ginger plants and aeroids. A 6.5 km circuit track begins at the lake’s edge, just below the car park and passes two large kauri pines, a tree that dominated Tableland forests for thousands of years.
Lake Eacham National Park
• Lake Eacham is a maar (a volcanic crater formed by explosions from overheating groundwater) surrounded by rainforest. A 4.5 km track around the lake passes many different rainforest communities. At the start of the track there is evidence of rainforest clearing during World War II with dominant grey-green wattles in the canopy and a large number of young rainforest species underneath.
Malanda Falls Conservation Park
• Small park on the North Johnstone River adjacent to the township of Malanda featuring a wide variety of rainforest trees and animals all can be viewed in close proximity. Picnic and camping facilities are available.
Mt Hypipamee National Park
• Located some 23km south of Atherton is the Mount Hypipamee National Park. The central attraction of this park is the massive volcanic crater which is now easily accessible by a well maintained walking track and viewing platform that looks into the crater which is 70m across, 58 metres down and then the lake at the bottom approx 82 metres deep. The park is located high on the southern Evelyn Tableland in the Hugh Nelson Range.
Peeramon Hotel
• Solitary pub which was once part of a town that has faded away into history.
