Moreton Island / Moreton Island National Park - Cities, Towns and Localities
Moreton Island or Moorgumpin in the local aboriginal language forms the eastern boundary to Moreton Bay in South East Queensland. The area was originally home to the Ngugi tribe. The Island itself is 37 km long and 10 km wide and is made entirely of sand covering some 16,800 ha.

Long sandy beaches abound, crisp clean and clear freshwater lagoons are dotted across the island most of which remains in a pristine state, wildflowers are also plentiful. Swamps are popular with the birdlife of which there has been 184 species recorded many of them migratory birds.

Aboriginal sites abound as do other attractions such as World War II fortifications and a whaling station. Today the Island is visited by whales, dugong, turtles, dolphins and many more marine species. Plus a few shipwrecks that can be explored.
