Mossman - Cities, Towns and Localities

The Mossman-Daintree was first established by timber millers looking for red cedar. A timber museum in the small township of Daintree details the history of the area.

Mossman a charming regional centre is Australia's most northerly sugar cane town and tropical fruit growing area. Guided tours of the Mossman Central Mill are available throughout the sugar cane harvesting season from June to October.

Mossman Gorge 5 minutes to the west of town is a very scenic section of the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park and is also home to the Kuku Yalanji people the area's traditional Aboriginal landowners. Guided bushwalks are available.

Daintree National Park
• Lush rainforests and coral reefs—two of the world’s richest ecosystems—meet at Daintree National Park, in far north Queensland. This 76 000ha park is an important part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area, declared for its outstanding natural values. And right next to the park is another World Heritage area, the Great Barrier Reef.

• From the moment you arrive at Karnak Playhouse, you can appreciate the vibrancy of the theatre, and once the show starts, you are drawn into a magical world of light and fantasy where the characters are animated by laser light.

The dance is the key to the theatre, and the contemporary styles and indigenous rhythms create a whorl of activity and story telling with the laser light as the set creator and the beautiful mountains as the backdrop.

• The Kuku Yalanji are the indigenous inhabitants of the land which stretches from around Cooktown in the north to near Chillagoe in the west and Port Douglas in the south. Many of us now live in Mossman Gorge, a world heritage listed rainforest behind Mossman. We are the true rainforest people who live in harmony with our environment. We are part of it and it is part of us. Our culture has always involved a deep respect for nature and an intimate knowledge and its cycles.

We were awarded the Tourism Queensland Award for the Best Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tourism Operation in Queensland after only two years in operation and have already published two books about rainforests. We have had the pleasure of hosting some of the world's most well-known travellers and sharing with them our most unique lifestyle.
