Small town with a chequered mining history. Approximately
200km from Cairns the area was first settled in the early
1900's to mine copper. The valuable ore was shipped to the
coast by Camel trains initially and then by rail to the

the mine unprofitable. The miners then turned their
attention to tin which was also found in abundance nearby.
Today no serious mining takes place in the area, however
visitors and tourists come here from all over to try their
hand at gold prospecting and gemstone prospecting.
