Riversleigh Fossil Museum
• 19 Marian St, MOUNT ISA QLD 4825 • Ph: 07 4749 1555 • Toll: 1300 659 660 • Email
The Centre has won several awards for excellence and is one of the great attractions of Outback Australia. Drawn from Australia's ancient past, the internationally significant Riversleigh Fossils Museum dep9icts and interprets the world heritage listed fossil deposits uncovered at Riversleigh, north of Mount Isa, unlocking their 30 million-year-old secrets.

Fossil remains of virtual ecosystems and animals, from the tiniest bats to the largest - a giant ancestor of the wombat - lie preserved in limestone rock at the Riversleigh Fossil deposit, some 250 km north of Mount Isa. Samples of these fossil bearing rocks are collected each year palaeontologists on fields trips.

“Only in one or two places in the course of the last three thousand million years, have conditions been just right to preserve anything like a representative sample of the species living at any one particular time. Those places are rare treasure houses of palaeontology... Riversleigh is one of them”

Sir David Attenborough

Experience the walk of a lifetime spanning prehistory, as dioramas depict Australi's appearance through the ages. You'ss discover bizarre and exotic animals such as Thingodonta, Thylacaleo, and Palorchestes - all once common Australian fauna.

Learn and experience the significance of these sites through world-class displays set in recreated limestone caves. A video documentary, palaeontological displays and collections of actual fossil material from the Riversleigh deposits bring these displays to life.

The Riversleigh Centre Pasminco Fossil Treatment Laboratory provides visitors with a unique opportunity to see the process of extracting fossils from limestone, first hand! As you are guided through the working laboratory, see the samples of rock as they are bathed in dilute acetic acid, and gradually and gently they reveal their hidden treasures - a tooth, a jaw, maybe even a complete skeleton. Through a microscope, some of the smallest fossils are distinguished from surrounding grit and sand.
