Mount Surprise - Cities, Towns and Localities
Part of the ‘Gulf Savannah’ region, Mount Surprise is a small railway town that services the surrounding area.

Sitting on the edge of what was an immense lava flow from an ancient volcano to the east, it is closely located to the multi-award winning ‘Undara Experience’.

The area is also the centre for another popular tourist activity, gem fossicking, that includes garnet, quartz, topaz, spinel, cairngorm and aquamarine.

Another great way to visit Mount Surprise and surrounding area is via the increasingly popular ‘Savannahlander’, a train route that connects Cairns, Kuranda, Mareeba, Dimbulah, Almaden, Mount Surprise, Einasleigh, and Forsayth.

In addition to our listed online travel guide information, contact the local tourism visitor centre for your destination for more attractions, tours, local maps and other information.

Undara Lava Tubes
The Undara Lava Tubes were formed some 190,000 years ago when a major volcano in the McBride volcanic province erupted, its molten lava flowing down a dry river bed. As the top layer quickly cooled and crusted, the fiery magma below continued to flow through the tubes taking it further and further from the volcano.
Forty Mile Scrub National Park
