Oakey is a small country town located 402 m above sea-level, some 29 km west of Toowoomba, on the Warrego
Highway, and is named after the river oaks on the nearby
Oakey is located within the rich agricultural area of the Darling
Downs, an area producing a range of crops, as well as supporting cattle. Well
established in the region are grain merchants, stockfeed manufacturers,
agricultural machinery manufacturers and the transport industry. There are also
significant coal reserves in the region.
Based in the area is the Oakey Army
Aviation Training Centre, a prominent military helicopter training facility, and
the Museum of Australian Army Flying. The town includes an Olympic pool and sporting facilities.
