From Townsville to Tennant Creek, travellers can follow in
the footsteps of our pioneers, who over 100 years have crossed the breadth of
Queensland into the Northern Territory. This 1,550 km wonderful driving
adventure, links the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef with the heart of
Australia's outback in the Northern Territory.
It was our droving pioneers,
who followed the same path with their vast herds of live cattle from the east
Kimberley to the coast. This same route, which later served as an important
supply line during World War II, allows the modern day tourist and traveller to
start either from Townsville or Tennant Creek, and taking in the outback towns
of Charters Towers, Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek, Cloncurry, Mount Isa and
Camooweal (on the Queensland-Northern Territory border), and Tennant Creek.
