Proserpine is the administrative centre of the
Whitsunday’s and a major Queensland sugar producing region.
Located on the Proserpine River. Sugar has been grown and
milled here since the 1860’s with the first mill opening for
business in 1897. The entire town is surrounded by sugar
cane fields and extend in all directions for many thousands
of hectares. The town is dominated by the massive sugar
mill which processes in excess of 2 million tonnes of cane
each year, producing approximately 285 000 tonnes of raw
sugar all of which is sent for export. The Giru Dala tribe
were the original inhabitants of the Proserpine region all
of whom were dispossessed of their range lands early on in
Proserpine’s history. Very few of them remain in the area
however a reconciliation group has been established to try
and rebuild the relationships between the white and
aboriginal inhabitants. For additional accommodation, attractions, tours and
