Raine Island - Cities, Towns and Localities
Aerial surveys in 1974, discovered a huge turtle rookery on Raine Island within the northern limits of the Great Barrier Reef. Located approximately 620 km north-north-west of Cairns on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef, not far from Haggerstone Island, Raine Island is a 32 hectares, vegetated coral cay, with broad sand beaches surrounding a low central rock platform. With the number of smaller coral cays such as Moulter and Caclennan Cays, together with the surrounding seas, makes this an area of international significance.

As well as the nesting site for the world’s largest remaining population of green turtle and also a significant seabird rookery, there are a number of shipwrecks, including HMS “Pandora”, the vessel associated with the capture of HMS “Bounty” mutineers. The place is also of significance to the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders.

The site also has the oldest European structure in tropical Australia, a stone beacon that was constructed in 1844.

The Raine Island Corporation was established under the Meaker Trust (Raine Island Research) Act 1981 to foster and ensure the conservation and management of the natural and cultural heritage resources of Raine Island, Moulter and Maclennan Cays and the surrounding seas.

Donations: You can contribute to the important work of the Raine Island Corporation! All funds received by way of gift or donation are used for conservation and research into Raine Island, Moulter and Maclennan Cays and the surrounding seas. Bequests in the name of the Corporation and larger donations may be directed towards specific research and conservation projects. Donations may be sent directly to the Corporation, but please don’t send cash through the post! Cheques or money orders made payable to Raine Island Corporation are gratefully accepted. To make a donation by credit card, please contact the Corporation.

All donors receive an information pack on Raine Island and are kept informed of the Corporation’s latest research and conservation efforts. All donations will be acknowledged.

Location: 620 km north-north-west of Cairns, on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef.
