Snapper Island - Cities, Towns and Localities

Snapper Island is off the mouth of the Daintree River and the Daintree National Park. It has coral rubble beaches and fringing reef. The island is great spot for picnicking, bush camping (limited campsite), checking out the flora and fauna, and snorkelling. You need to take your own water.

Snapper Island National Park
• Declared a national park in 1939 this pristine island with its magnificent coral and fish viewing is just 27 km north of Port Douglas and 4km from the mouth of Daintree River. The surrounding waters are rich in nutrients and support a wide variety of marine life.

Estuarine Crocodile
• Typically occurs in brackish waters, inhabiting large river estuaries and deltas with associated coastal mangrove swamp, also extends into deep rivers far above tidal influence and occurs in freshwater pools and swamps. In Australia many crocodiles occur in tidal reaches with mangrove vegetation, and also occur in adjacent floodplain billabongs and spring-fed swamps. They may also extend 150km upstream into freshwater non-tidal areas.

Marine Stingers
• There are many species of jellyfish found in the oceans of the world. In Australia 2 of these species, the Chironex Box Jellyfish and the Irukandji, are classed as dangerous tropical jellyfish (marine stingers). During the warmer months 'Marine Stingers' may be present in tropical waters, but by taking a few simple precautions you can minimise risks associated with these two types of potentially dangerous jellyfish.
