Texas - Cities, Towns and Localities
Just north of the Queensland - NSW border this small rural town lies on the banks of the Dumaresq River and was once a tobacco growing region with many Chinese immigrants trying their hand at growing it. A tobacco factory was built in the 1870's to service the local industry however a large flood wiped the factory and most of the town out in 1890.

The town was repositioned on higher ground and tobacco remained a staple of the area for many years. Since the 1950's nary a tobacco plant has been planted as with many other tobacco growing regions around Australia this industry has gradually faded away as the glamour of smoking too has faded.

Texas is located on the alternative tourist route stretching from the Fossickers Way at Warialda in New South Wales, joining with the Country Way at Mundubbera in Queensland. It also provides the most direct route from Tamworth to Rockhampton and offers the tourist a chance to see and experience the beauty of outback Queensland, via the small country towns on route. Many of these townships offer scenic walks and lookouts. There is also the fascinating histories documented in the local museums and information centres.
