In 1930, two drovers from Andamooka Station saw the
beautiful gemstones on the hillside, discovering the
Andamooka Opal Field. Andamooka Opal is among the finest
quality by world standards, with the Opal Matrix being
unique to the Andamooka region.
Located some 600 km north of Adelaide, Andamooka is the gateway
to the Torrens Track, via Mulgaria Station to the Farina
Ruins. It connects to
William Creek and the Birdsville Track
via Marree and the Flinders Ranges via Lyndurst. Although
this is private property, permits are available to access
the Torrens Track.
Tours are available to view modern day mining and noodling
is permitted on the mullock heaps. Early miners cottages are
listed on the State Heritage Register and is popular with
the tourist. If you have a 4WD, the track to Lake Torrens,
White Dam and Torrens Track are not to be missed. Also of
interest are Roxby Downs and the Olympic Dam Mine.
