Located in the northern area of the Mount Lofty Ranges, the Clare Valley is one of Australia's oldest wine regions. With vistas of row upon row of vines, in seemingly manicures lines and curves, set against plains, pastures and valleys, home to a number of lovingly restore heritage towns, the Clare Valley offers plenty of attractions and activities for the visitor. Whether you are just here for the wines, there is plenty of other things to enjoy, from the local produce, local restaurants, rural experiences, culture and heritage.

An easy two hour drive from Adelaide, and next door to the Barossa Valley just to the east, the Clare Valley provides the perfect place to stay, explore and tour. It also makes a great stopover for those enroute to the Yorke Peninsula, Flinders Ranges and the Murray River.

The Riesling and Rattler Trails
• The Clare Valley Riesling Trail and Rattler Trail are two popular and accessible walking and cycling trails.

The Riesling Trail follows the contours and curves of the former railway from Auburn to Clare and 10 km north to Barinia Road. The trail passes through a region steeped in history, flanked by quiet townships and vineyards, and is blessed with stunning views. You are never far from some great restaurants, cafes and cellar doors.

This recreational trail for travels along 35 kilometres and connects the townships of Auburn, Leasingham, Watervale, Penwortham, Sevenhill, Clare and White Hut. The trail is an integral segment of the 800 kilometre Mawson Trail and provides a wonderful opportunity to discover and experience the townships, soak up the history of the Clare Valley and enjoy the grandeur of its unique, unspoilt rural landscape.

There are trail loops which allow you to return to your starting point without back-tracking. Loop trails are sign posted and maps are available from the local outlets.

The Rattler Trail is a rail trail that runs some 30 km from Riverton and connects to the southern end of the Riesling Trail at Auburn. It follows the route of the former railway line.

Both trails are open all year, with spring and autumn being the loveliest times of the year for walking and cycling. Summer can be hot and dry, so you need to ensure plenty of water and sun protection. February to April is the vintage period for harvesting. In winter, the country side is lush and green and you often see the mists hovering over the gullies.

The trails operate with the co-operation of property owners and the friendliness of residents. Please respect the private properties, take all rubbish with you, move quietly near farm animals and observe all the Give Way signs.
