Copley Attractions

Aroona Dam
• Built in the 1950’s, Aroona Dam supplies water to the towns of Leigh Creek, Copley and Lydhurst. The area is also home to a colony of Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies and other flora and fauna. There are picnic and BBQ facilities, as well as many spectacular walking trails.
Coal Train
• The Coal Train passes through the township twice daily on its way to and from the Leigh Creek Coal Mine. Each train is 2.8 km long and consists of 161 wagons carrying about 11,500 tonnes of coal. The coal is then railed 280 km to the power stations at Pt Augusta. It is a sight to see Australia’s longest coal train on its journey.
History
• The region has numerous copper diggings in the hills south east of Copley, with mines scattered in the area. Take the time to visit the historic Aboriginal Ochre Pits just 10 km north of Lyndhurst.
Mail Run
• There is a twice-weekly mail run which you can join that visits nearby stations and the Aboriginal communities at Nepabunna and Iga Warta. Enquire at the Post Office in Copley.
Old Beltana
• This is the town that refuses to die. The by-gone Hub of the Overland Telegraph Railway and Copper Trails. You can see the old historical buildings and cemetery and the unique railway dam. Travel through Puttapa Gap and see the ruins of cottages and the old bridge that formed part of the original Ghan Railway.
