Gawler Town Hall

"The Best of Town and Country"

Named after Governor Gawler and originally settled in 1839 makes this wonderfully historic town one of South Australia’s oldest. The site for the town was also chosen by Colonial Light the founder of Adelaide. From the 1860’s the township boomed and many wonderful and significant bluestone buildings were constructed which today give the town a charm all its own.

Situated next to a river the town has an identifiable historical precinct with many beautiful homes laid out in a grid pattern similar to that employed in Adelaide.

The town with a population in excess of 18,000 people is the gateway to the north of the state with most all traffic having to pass through it to get to the Barossa or to other areas north of Adelaide.

Gawler Attractions

Adelaide Soaring Club
As the second largest club in Australia the Soaring Club can take visitors on a magnificent flight over Gawler and the region. Float on air currents whilst viewing the exhilarating sights of sea, city and picturesque countryside.
Para Para Mansion
This magnificent stately building completed in 1862, on an estate of once 450 acres, provides a unique window into Gawler’s prosperous past as South Australia’s first country town. On viewing Para Para visitors will find it easy to understand why this home of 23 rooms featuring a domed ballroom was used to entertain royalty - Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh back in 1867. Para Para is no longer open to the public for tours as it is now privately owned.
The Whispering Wall
Experience the unusual acoustic phenomenon of the Barossa Valley Reservoir which is called the ‘Whispering Wall’! It’s an engineering marvel! Enjoy a picnic or barbeque on the bank of this most picturesque area. Alternatively dine at the Whispering Wall Tea Rooms at the entrance to the reservoir. Explore the Water Works Museum. This sets the scene for an excellent relaxing tour from Gawler.
