Welcome to the Garden City of the
Riverland, Loxton. It was here that the
Sturt Memorial commemorates Captain Charles Sturt and his
heroic bank rowed downstream past this spot on their great journey
of discovery,
on 30th January 1830
It was also here that another plaque commemorates the first reunion
of the Loxton family descendants of Albert Rich Loxton, who arrived from
Somersetshire, England, in the sailing ship Elgin, in the year 1841. Loxton is
situated on the southern bank of the Murray River and services the surrounding
district. With a number of attractions including the Historical Village, it is
also only a short drive northwest to the townships of Moorook and
Kingston-on-Murray. Here you can wander Banrock Station's boardwalks, discover
the Murray's backwaters and creeks with a relaxing cruise, sample award-winning
wines or just relax and enjoy the country hospitality provided by a variety of
accommodation venues.
