One of South Australia’s newest outback communities is Marla. The
name is derived from the Aboriginal word ‘marlu’ meaning kangaroos. The
township straddles the Ghan railway line and the Stuart Highway, both
are lifelines to the south and north. Marla also marks the northern access to the Oodnadatta Track. A road
west leads 33 km to the opal fields and settlement of Mintabie. A
permit is obtained from the Marla Police Station prior entry.
