South Australia’s first proclaimed provincial city, Port Pirie diverse
history and proud multicultural heritage has earned it a reputation as a
Port Pirie is South Australia’s oldest industrial town and home to the
world’s largest lead smelting works.
Port Pirie also positioned as the gateway to the ‘Great Southern Flinders Ranges’ and
only a couple of hours drive from Adelaide.
Any visit to Port Pirie should start at the Port Pirie Regional Tourism and
Arts Centre, not only for the great tourism information available, but also the
number of outstanding attractions, including the Pirie Rail Express, a one point
two kilometre miniature railway that takes visitors on a replica journey from
Port Pirie to Broken Hill; and a beautifully landscaped indoor model rail layout
featuring 1,000 feet of track. Both the miniature and model railways are
operated on the first and third Sunday of the month by enthusiastic volunteers,
who are always keen to impart their exceptional railway knowledge.
