Stone Hut - Cities, Towns and Localities
Located between Laura and Wirrabara, in the beautiful Southern Flinders Ranges, is the township of Stone Hut. It was once a stopover place for teamsters who were busily carting wood from the forest to the mines in Burra. Surveyed in 1874 the town was surveyed, trade soon expanded the little settlement.

It was also an overnight stopover for the coach and the change of horses. Passengers would have stayed at the Royal Mail Hotel, established in 1879 and located on the main road. Unfortunately it has since been demolished.

The first school was built in 1874 and a new school in 1890. By 1904 there were 70 children attending the school. This school building is now a lovingly restored private residence.

Stone Hut also had a number of blacksmiths, who were constantly in demand, and the Old Bakery is the site of one of them. There is the Soldiers Memorial Hall, erected in 1926 as a memorial to the solders of the First World War.

In later years with the advent of the railway, Stone Hut became a major area for grain transhipment. Today, the population of Stone Hut is about 26. When passing through, stop over for some great food and hospitality at Wheatley’s Old Bakery.
