The smallest town in South Australia is William Creek, surrounded by one of
Australias largest cattle properties, Anna Creek Station. From the junction, the 202 km
north to Oodnadatta Track follows the ancient Aboriginal trade route,
famous for its permanent springs. Camel trains and cattlemen passed
this way, as did the Overland Telegraph Line from Port Augusta to
Darwin (completed in 1870) and the original "Ghan" narrow gauge
railway. Many have no doubt stopped at one of William Creeks main attraction,
the unique bush pub.
William Creek can be accessed from four different routes north, Oodnadatta
south, Roxby Downs or Marree, and via Coober Pedy in the west. Currently all
these roads are unsealed and are usually well maintained making them suitable
for 2 wheel drive vehicles, however this can change quickly due to weather
conditions.
