Yunta is a small, geographically isolated
rural community located on the Barrier Highway, 200 km west
of
Broken Hill
and 85 km east of Peterborough. Established
in 1887 as a railway town on the Adelaide to
Silverton
rail route, today, the town acts as a service centre for the
local community that numbers roughly 150, as well as
stop-over for travellers between
Sydney (Broken Hill
- Adelaide) to
Perth
route or to the tourist town of Arkaroola.
Current facilities include a telecentre/post office, two
roadhouses (one with a caravan site), public toilets (in the
Parking Bay) and a hotel. There is also a school, police
station, CFS and SA Ambulance, District Hall, tennis courts,
race course and an airstrip. Attractions
include the annual Yunta Picnic Races and Gymkhana (May long
weekend) and the Easter Tennis Tournament.
